Wanna Write for The Weekly Geek?

Are you the kind of person who emphatically evangelizes everything truly good that gets absorbed into your brain? Do you crave new experiences and suck the marrow out of life on a daily basis? Are you the kind of person who always has others coming up to you for advice on new gadget purchases, or what movie to go see on a Friday? Well maybe you'd like to share your sage knowledge with the readers and listeners of The Weekly Geek.

We're currently accepting submissions for additional writers. We're looking for people who are enthusiastic not only about video games, but the full gamut of geekery. We're looking for someone who yearns to get their voice heard, who is genuinely interested in blogging. More features writer than news republisher, more storyteller than dry press release rehasher. Writing at The Weekly Geek is an unpaid position but the experience you gain could be very valuable in the long run. There's the opportunity for free review copies of games, the chance to be read and edited by a group of your peers, and the satisfaction of being a part of a genuinely cool community of Geeks. Interested? Here are the requirements:

1. Submit a sample article to chris@weeklygeekshow.com with the subject line "Weekly Geek Writing Position". This article can be about whatever you want in the realm of geekiness. Be entertaining, be informative, be enthusiastic, be unique. It could be a list, it could be a comic strip. It could be a gangsta rap. It doesn't even have to be an article. It just has to show that you can provide awesome new content for the site.

2. Bonus points if you aren't already writing somewhere else.

3. Bonus points if you can draw or create your own header images for posts.

4. Bonus points if your topic of choice is a niche area of geekery (space program geek? Cell phone geek? Food geek? Zydeco music geek?)

I'll read all the submissions and choose new writers based on their writing ability, proposed schedule of posts and other unnamed arcane factors of my deciding. It's a great opportunity to get your name out there and be read by literally hundreds (!) of Weekly Geek fans. The rewards are well worth it.

Presenting the new Weekly Geek

newweeklygeeksite.jpg

Consider this post a sort of new Weekly Geek "manifesto". Except less sinister-sounding.

The Weekly Geek has been around in many forms since its inception in 2002(ish). First we were a radio show on a small desert town's college station. It was just Grant and I back then, and we would rock every Wednesday morning with three hours of music, geeky or otherwise hilarious news, video game reviews and pseudo-internet-celebrity phone interviews. We even did a comedy sketch or two.

During the three years The Weekly Geek ran in Ellensburg, we put on a couple big video game tournaments, covered two E3s and gave away thousands of dollars worth of games to on-air callers. We started uploading the non-music bits of the show to the radio station's website around 2004, before we even knew what podcasting was. You had to walk uphill both ways to download a podcast those days, and that's the way we liked it.

In 2005 we launched the first official Weekly Geek blog and attached our audio file to an RSS feed. Ever since then we've tried to bring you a steady stream of great articles and content, unique to the geek community. We've even started our own little community here, which has been one of the coolest things I have ever personally been involved in.

You may noticed the place has changed a little bit... hopefully this design will serve you better than the last disorganized mess we forced you to look at. There's revamped commenter options, a better tag system and archives and direct links to download the most recent podcasts on the right hand bar. These certainly are exciting times.

The Weekly Geek T-Shirt Coming mid-April

shirtsforspring.jpg

Hello fellow geekateers! With the wrap-up of the t-shirt design contest, I'm sure you're all wondering when the green, geeky goodness is going to be available for purchase? Good question! SplitReason informed me that the shirt has entered the production queue and should be ready within 2-3 weeks, which puts us at mid-April. The shirt sizes are: S, M, L, XL, and XXL. Even if my vote (which didn't count!) was for the first design, I can hardly wait to start rocking this shirt! Huzzah, indeed! Oops, I meant...hooray for video games!

A new challenger! Welcome Ross Rosenberg to The Weekly Geek

rossmonkey.jpgIn the grand tradition of the incestuous Internet-o-blog-o-sphere, we at the Weekly Geek would like you to welcome our newest writer, Ross Rosenberg. Ross is a writer over at Ectoplasmosis (much like Herr Bizzleteats) and this photo is the most accurate portrayal of him I could find. Ross is going to class up this blog and make it at least 100% more Jewish. We are glad to have two writers from one of the most intelligent blogs on the interwebs join us in geek culture discussion, and I hope you are too.

Will writing for multiple blogs under so many ruthless editors finally crush Ross' spirit? Will he go on a mad monkey rampage, biting everyone and giving us all monkey-pox? I SURE DO HOPE SO!

Game Review Manifesto

Game Review Manifesto from The Weekly GeekHere at The Weekly Geek we are of the general notion that game reviews stink. The number system assigned to most reviews on game sites is abstract at best, and doesn't give you a sense of whether or not you personally should pick up the game. It's arbitrary and inane, but unfortunately a lot of review aggregators require it. In the past, we've split our reviews into parts: Funness, Shininess and Worthiness. This system is currently being phased out for a new number based system because we are awful conformists and can't resist following other sites like lemmings. We will still give you the comprehensive (read: opinionated) coverage you've come to know and love, but with added numbers. We all love numbers! Here is the scheme for your reference:

  • 0 - The worst possible of all possible games. This game killed your father and raped your mother.
  • 1 - Really still awful. This is the sort of game that if played for an extended period causes your head to cave in.
  • 2 - Not a good game. Flawed but has some redeeming qualities that might make it worth your while or a rent if everything better is already checked out.
  • 3 - Average game. Probably worth a rent and a laugh, but you wouldn't go out and buy it.
  • 4 - Good game. A must rent, and buying it wouldn't be a waste of money.
  • 5 - Masterpiece. You must own this game! Why would you still be reading a review about it when you could be playing it right now! Go!

We've updated the majority of our older reviews to reflect this new system. Look for the score at the bottom of the post, it will look a bit like this: Score: 5/5 Buy it!

Here Comes a New Challenger!

mackandwilwheaton.jpgWe are always expanding here at The Weekly Geek, and today I would like to announce the addition of a new writer to our staff. We'd like to welcome Mack to the geek crew, coming on board as a contributing editor. You may know Mack on the forums as MR3, and as the guy who is auctioning off this sweet-ass autographed guitar on eBay. Mack wrote a great freelance review of Sam and Max for us, and we decided to just bring him on staff. We are always looking for great writers, so submit your freelance reviews today! Also, make fun of Mack for his name. A lot. It's all part of the hazing.

Podcastiversary Contest!

podcasttriviacontest.jpg

It's our two year anniversary, harkening back to the days of yore when we first started attaching mp3 files to an rss feed. Ahh, how time flies. To best celebrate our persistence on the Internets, we are having a HUGE CONTEST to giveaway a metric ass-load of the stuff that we picked up at PAX! The contest rules are simple: whoever can answer the most trivia questions about The Weekly Geek wins. Some of these questions are common knowledge about the show, and some require extensive research. Some may even require listening to old shows. Good thing they are so darned entertaining!

All you have to do is send an email to contest@weeklygeekshow.com with your answers (some are fill in the blank)! Questions are after the jump. You have until September 16th to enter. Get to it!

In case of a tie... well we'll have some sort of geek off.

Sponsor Thanks!

Blue Snowball MicrophoneI just wanted to give a big thank you to all the people who have donated to the podcast in the past month. With your kind contributions we were able to pick up an additional Blue Snowball microphone. Previously we were recording with just one Blue Snowball, so this is a pretty big step.

We don't have any corporate help here at The Weekly Geek, we do it all out of our passion for all things Geeky. Everything has been either out of pocket or from fan support, but eventually we hope to do it full time. Your generosity and continued support is greatly appreciated. (If you didn't know, you can donate via PayPal using the buttons at the very bottom of the site.) I assure you that all the money donated to the site is earmarked for web hosting fees and podcast equipment. The more support we have from our fans, the better we can make the podcast!

Support your favorite geeks!

Did you know that The Weekly Geek, both in blog and podcast form, is done on a completely ZERO budget, with no corporate sponsors? This is not a lie! Though we like to pretend we are living large, we certainly do not. We just have years of experience making the most out of what little pocket money we can scrounge up, and from the support of our listeners.

We just want to take this time to thank all of you who have supported the site in the past and want to encourage anyone who hasn't to drop a buck or two in the tip jar. This goes to web hosting and bandwidth fees and podcasting supplies like microphones and software.

If you want something tangible in return for your support, why not check out our high quality video game prints in the store? They are all hand made and limited edition.

There are other ways you can support the site without having to pull out your wallet, including clicking on any of Caspian's iTunes links and purchasing songs from the iTunes store. Or clicking on Google ads. Or by clicking any of our affiliate banners.

Heck, even if you just sent a link to one friend, we'd be more than grateful.

Thanks again, and remember to subscribe to the podcast! You'll get shows early if you do!

Geeky Desk Contest Winner

deskwinner.jpg

Earlier this month we announced a contest for whoever had the geekiest desk filled with toys, gadgets and other junk. A winner has been decided, and the gold medal/crown/trophy goes to Charlie! He narrowly beat out Sitnalta (who had a freakin' Tesla coil) due to his massive amount of toys, TV tuned to Firefly, copy of Kitchen Confidential and authentic movie memorabilia. Congratulations! For winning this contest, Charlie recieves various adulation for being an obsessive-compulsive pack-rat, a hand-made Weekly Geek statue, a limited edition hardcover copy of the first Penny Arcade collection, a Wii Play gold medal, a Microsoft snowboarding hat, Adobe board wax, a Zelda T-Shirt and whatever miscellaneous swag I can jam into a small cardboard box.

Check out the forum for all the entries. Competition was tight!

Pimpin the Sponsors

Apple iTunes

Ok, so we don't really have sponsors. But we have ads now. The Weekly Geek is a completely FREE podcast and blog supported by YOU. We don't have any huge corporate sponsors, everything is out of pocket and ad-supported. We do it as a labor of love, but a little help with the bandwidth would be nice. So, if you like the show, please click on our banners, make use of our donation buttons at the bottom of the page or check out some merch in our store. Every little bit helps, and the more support we get the better our show can become!

We recently signed up to be an iTunes affiliate, so if you buy anything on iTunes, click one of our banners like the one you see there, and if you make a purchase on iTunes within 24 hours, we get a small cut. Help out the show and get some cool digitally delivered content. Sounds like a good deal to me.

It's a long time coming but we finally look like a respectable web site. Don't miss this week's podcast, it's going to be HUGE.

Ol' Unreliable

It's that time of the week again! Oh, wait, what's that? There was no Weekly Geek update? Yeahhhh... see about that. We had some technical difficulties. We think that terrorists were probably trying to take us down (we are a threat to them, you see) and the interweb crashed. Yeah! The whole internet just crashed and we weren't able to record a show at the proper time. Crazy huh? Well it's the truth.

We will be back sometime later this week. In the meantime, might I recommend checking out some of our archived shows? Both the iTunes feed and the other feed should have some of our old interviews, such as the one with Mark Hamill and the one with Maurice LaMarche. They are fun times. Go to it! Or don't.

Better T-shirts okay.

Weekly Geek tee!

Okay so I know the last t-shirts I put up for preorder weren't cool. They were just a logo and no one wants to be our billboard. SO! I made a shirt that I would actually want to wear. Do you want one? There is this awesome design on the front and the shirts will be a dark navy because I know you feel the need to show how sad you are by wearing dark colors. Now taking preorders. Shipping is going to be $3.00, standard and the shirts themselves will be $12. They will be high quality shirts from Brunetto, who I have gone through before and are awesome. Help support the show by buying a t-shirt!

Weekly Geek Casting Call!

There comes a time in the life of a podcast, little Timmy, when that podcast starts to notice little changes. Hair growing in strange places, and a strange feeling when other podcasts walk by. It is in this time of a podcast's life that it needs to grow and change. That is why, Timmy, today we are announcing an open casting call for an additional host to The Weekly Geek. We are growing, and we feel our programming should grow as well. Here are the specifics:

• This is an unpaid position. It may become paid in the future when budget allows. You do, however, get to keep any review copies of product you solicit, and the opportunities for bonuses such as games and trips are plentiful.
• Applicant must have an extensive knowledge of gaming, and be completely current on gaming trends, news, and terms. Must be an avid gamer.
• Applicant must have own recording equipment, which includes adequate quality headset, computer for recording and reliable broadband internet connection. Software can be provided.
• Applicant must be available each week for recordings, generally between the hours of 6-7PM on Sunday evenings. Times can be flexible, but you must be reliable. We need someone who can be on the show every week, no exceptions.
• Previous broadcast/podcast experience not required, but is a plus.
• Must be self-motivated and energetic.

If you are interested and believe you qualify, please send cover letter outlining your qualifications (resume not needed) and a short audio recording (aircheck) to frodo@weeklygeekshow.com (please no large files over 15mb or so). The recording can be a sample of voice or on-air work, or it can be an audio cover letter. We are flexible.

We will be going through a short casting/interview process with qualified applicants to see if they mesh well with the current show format, and play nicely with current hosts. You don't have to be local to any of the hosts, you can be from anywhere in the world.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing your awesome airchecks!

how do i maek poast?

Hi everybody out on the intertron! The Geek, here.

So this is our new webpage, huh? Pretty snazzy.

Well, the podcast of our first new show should be up sometime later today, so be sure to check it out.

And now I've also got this fancy little bloggy thing to talk to the masses directly. I promise I'm going to try to update it quite a bit more than my poor, neglected Live Journal.

In addition to our show now being released today, it is also Sci-Fi friday on the Sci Fi Channel. Probably one of the absolute best block of 4 hours on TV, especially if you're a nerd. You've got cult favorite Firefly, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and the highly acclaimed Battlestar Galactica (which I have yet to check out, personally).

SG-1 has just entered its 9th season and now ties The X-Files for longest running sci-fi TV series. And there's a good reason. The show is fantastic. They took the basic concept from the hit movie, Stargate, and just ran with it. With a great attention to detail and continuity, fantastic writing, and top notch acting, it's just seriously high quality stuff. I'm not completely up to speed on the show, because I didn't start in on it from the beginning. Starting last November, White Mage and I have been trying to get caught up, watching all the episodes on DVD from Netflix. We're all the way through season 7, but season 8 isn't available on DVD yet. In the mean time, we've been keeping up with Atlantis and taping each episode of season 9 so we can get caught up on that when season 8 is released.

And if you're interested in SG-1, I highly reccomend using the awesome Netflix service. Or, if you'd like to own all of them, Amazon has a sweet deal on the first 7 seasons. Plus, season 8 is finally going to be released on October 4.

So keep your browser tuned to this webpage and keep your eye out for our first podcast later today. And check out Sci Fi Friday tonight starting at 7:00pm e/p.

First post

Hey everyone, Frodo here. I am currently in the process of moving all our old reviews and some of our old downloads to this new fancy webpage, but for now it is just a basic blog. We are going to record our very first podcast-only show tonight, with a special guest host. Some changes to the show!

-No more commercials (being that we aren't associated with KCWU fm anymore)
-Less music (more talk is better anyway)
-Possible bi-weekly shows
-Frequent blog updates

So be sure to add our RSS feed to wherever you put those, and tell your friends that The Weekly Geek is back!
