Update: Screw Shrek Caption Contest - Win 2 XBLA Games

We've got 5 codes for both Screwjumper and Shrek n' Roll for the Xbox Live Arcade, and I am just itching to give them away. I doubt there is any sort of salve in existence that I can use, so the best way I can come up with to sate my scratchy needs is to hold a contest. (I apologize for any disturbing imagery that might have caused. Please direct all complaints to Qais.) The perfect title for this contest? Screw Shrek. That's right, I came up with that all by myself.

The rules are simple. All you have to do is comment on this post with a funny caption to this image (why not use this opportunity to register for an account?). The top 5 funniest captions will receive codes for both games.

Contest ends Dec. 7. Go on, be funny and win some free stuff!

UPDATE: comment registration works now! Comment away!

Free Book About Games for Download

Trigger Happy book coverYou guys like free stuff, right? How about free books? Slaking your vast thirst for knowledge gratis is one of the simple pleasures in life, and when the opportunity arises, you better take it.

We Make Money Not Art reports this morning that Steven Poole's book Trigger Happy: The Inner Life of Videogames is available as a free PDF download. From the site:

In the author's words: Trigger Happy is a book about the aesthetics of videogames - what they share with cinema, the history of painting, or literature; and what makes them different, in terms of form, psychology and semiotics.

Indeed, why play video games this holiday week when you can just read about them! Check it out here.

Free game! And it isn't even awful!

maxpresident.jpgHey, remember back when I was just some schmo freelance writer and I wrote that review of the new Sam and Max games? Heh. That takes me back... But, if for some reason you didn't heed my advice and immediately go out and buy the games, first of all why the hell not? Are you a jerk or something? Jeez. Okay, okay, maybe you were too dang broke to pick up even one measly episode. Well now you can! Telltale Games, in anticipation of the release of the second season, has decided to give away Episode Four: Abe Lincoln Must Die! for free on their website. It's a great game and a good way to get into the series if you haven't already.

And if, after the game, you want to know the whole story you could always pick up a copy of the complete Sam & Max: Season One in the Weekly Geek Store!

    Sticking it to the man.

usedSticker.gifWe all know that large chain game stores are pretty much the bane of gamers. It's a fairly universal experience among our kind to receive crappy treatment at our local GameEBcrazystop. Once in a while, you'll run into a few decent employees peppered around these franchises, but for the most part, people who work at these stores annoy you with constant pushing of pre-orders and membership cards. Many times, they'll hassle you for returning or exchanging a game even if you do it within the limited guidelines of their own store policies. I've even heard stories of game store employees telling their customers that their choice of purchase is stupid and that they should get something else. On top of all this, their used games programs are pretty much just thinly veiled extortion, buying used games from you for 10-15 bucks at most and selling them back to someone else for only 5 dollars less than new.

However, depending on participation in your area, there is a small, petty yet satisfying and legal way to get back at them.
