You may recall my Steampunk Nerf Gun post from a while back, where I painted a Nerf Maverick all metallic to go with a costume I was making. I got an email from the creator of the Grab-it Pack(™!) who saw the post and mentioned that multiple people have purchased this pocketed accessory as a holster for their Nerf Mavericks.
Extra pockets are always nice and the Grab-it Pack actually looks like an incredibly useful pack if you're going hiking, cosplaying as the Man-With-Too-Many-Pockets or raiding a tomb full of ancient treasure and secrets.
They are about 23 bucks and you can order them from GrabitPack.com.
[Thanks, Louis!]

Blatantly ripped off from Joystiq this weekend comes this absolutely fantastic series of Metroid cosplay photos. Not only did this girl create a convincing costume complete with lights, but her corn syrup blood antics are super creative, and the photos capture the sense of the games pretty well. It also helps that she is incredibly cute. Check out the full gallery (along with some more cosplay) over at Pixelninja.

I am a big fan of cosplay, and Halloween is like cosplayer Christmas. Or... just cosplayer Halloween I guess. While this year I didn't end up making a costume (my plans for a Weighted Companion Cube outfit sort of fell through), my equally crafty friends went to town. Here is a photo of my good friend Kristen dressed as a piranha plant from Super Mario Brothers. That lady is so crafty.
Vote for Kristen over at Wired!

You might say to me, Colette, what about this is geeky? I will reply to you: Dear reader, it is the ultimate in geek-chic for the D & D enthusiast, the fantasy fiction reader, and the Dragoncon cosplayer. It's an irresistible milkshake of cute, clever and downright dorky, and if I had a dog to put it on, he'd already be outfitted.
Organic Armor also make costumes for adults and kids, and can whip you up a hell of a horned helmet if you happen to be in need. I don't have specific reason to buy a horned helmet, but I'll be damned if I don't want one. Sir Didymus would be proud.

We're hopefully all in agreement that cosplay is, for the most part, a scary and horrible thing. Horrifying if for no other reason than the folks that choose to strap, squeeze, and jiggle themselves into the tight, midriff baring ensembles that are normally emulated. When cosplay (or simply emulation of your favorite character) is done well it can be a really interesting and disturbingly illuminating sight. Yet still a large percentage of the stuff is relegated to Japanese game franchises and if I never see another otaku dressed up as Sephiroth for as long as I live I'll die a happy man (Ok, I'll probably still die bitter and angry).
So why so few awesome outfits from other game franchises? Why haven't I seen Maniac Mansion cosplay or kids at cons dressed as Commander Keen firing rayguns at a horde of vicious Vorticons?
Thankfully, someone has answered the potentially brain scarring call and not only put together a totally sweet Guybrush Threepwood outfit but also posted instructions for how you can do the same. This is probably borderline cosplay but they've also constructed an Elaine Marley costume and then got down with a piratical feast.
I'm not normally one to advocate cosplay but there was grog, giant turkey legs, and a house full of pirates. I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't point out fantastic game and pirate inspired antics. This is truly cosplay done right.
