Is being called a "gamer" a bad thing? On this week's podcast, Chris, Mack and Qais look into how gamers as a group are regarded by the general populace. Are we really all just trash talking escapist sociopaths? Or is "gamer" just another flavor of geek? We discuss various arguments on both sides, also touching on this week's news from Microsoft's answer to the Wii, to analyzing Portal's main villain, to Penny Arcade's newest indie games venture.

We here at The Weekly Geek loathe gimmicks. That's why we aren't trying to draw you in by posting some wacky April Fool's Day version of the podcast. Because we love you. This week Chris, Qais, Colette and Mack scrape the bottom of the barrel of geek news this week to discuss the Portal song in Rock Band, Bawls' G33K B33R, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Microsoft's lawyers being very un-lawyery. We wrap it up with a cool, crisp and refreshing discussion about gimmicky control schemes.

So weighted. Such a companion. Soft and fluffy like the cubes in my dreams.

And here we see Qais after the cube has eaten his entire head. Amazing. Is there nothing that adorable cube can't do? Look at it! B'awwwwww I think he winked at meeeeeeee.

Everyone I've spoken to has at least liked Portal if not absolutely loved it and spent several minutes raving about it. However, the most common complaint appears to be the length of the game. Granted, you can always go back and play it again, and many of us have, but it just never has that new game feeling.
While I can't make Portal longer, I can at least provide a way to get back a little of the fun of playing a new game. That is if you're a PC gamer, those of us playing Portal on the console are out of luck.
A total genius at Instructables has posted directions for equipping the Half Life 2 weapon set in Portal. Yes coming up with clever solutions to your droid problem was fun, but a gravity gun can be just as fun, especially when you're not supposed to have it. As I previously mentioned I'm not a PC gamer so this remains untested, report in with your results and pictures of gravity gun captured cake.

Regardless of your take on gaming/meme tattoos, if you have to get one you might as well get an awesome Portal tattoo rather than another stupid Triforce.

I am finishing unpacking and having a staff movie night this weekend on my brand new HDTV (it's so shiny, I am sorry I can't stop talking about it!) but I am going to try to work in some time to finish Half Life 2 and Beautiful Katamari. Of course, Portal's advanced puzzles are going to be interspersed between heated matches of Puzzle Quest and E4 on XBLA. There's just too much good stuff out. What are you diving in to this weekend? Are you fully enjoying this deluge of excellent games?

While Portal is just 1/5th of Valve's excellent Orange Box, I am reviewing it separately because it deserves it. I am also shaking up the normal review formula we use here at The Weekly Geek because Portal shakes up the way we think about video games. So there.
It's difficult to discuss Portal in any fashion that doesn't reveal spoilers. So I am saying to you right now, don't read this if you haven't played it. If you haven't played it, go pick it up. I am going to say right here in the beginning of the article that it is probably the game of the year. Yes, even over Bioshock. This is a must-own game for anyone who is a fan of fun. It's genuinely hilarious, challenging without being frustrating, and so well-designed and polished I literally cannot come up with any flaws to harp on. Yes, it's that good. Go get it. Got it? Played through it? Good. Hit the jump for my review.

This week, Chris, Grant and Amy talk about how incredibly amazing Portal is, gush about Valve and the Orange Box, talk about other video games (what!) including Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP, Beautiful Katamari and the Haloez. Thundercats may not suck as a movie, Star Trek has almost been completely cast and we see the return of a beloved Weekly Geek feature: live Internet surfing! Oh, there's also a huge giveaway at the end, so be sure to stay tuned for that! Download the show here, or subscribe to the feed to get it delivered, hot and fresh every Monday evening! Man, what a crazy week for games. Not only was Orange Box released, but we have had Phantom Hourglass for a week and Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP came out. Sheesh! Way too much to play. I am currently rocking Portal, which is seriously the funniest game I have played since Conker's Bad Fur Day. Zelda fits in the usual DS slot, which is right before bed. What are you playing this weekend?

Tucked away in the corner of the EA booth, with very little fanfare, was the Orange Box. Well, most of the Orange Box. They had a demo reel of Team Fortress 2 (one of the many non-playable games on the show floor, the bastards) and Portal running on the PS3. While playing something like Portal on the PS3 with a controller isn't the most preferable thing in the world... it's fucking PORTAL. I've been anticipating this awesome puzzle game for quite some time, and I have to say it lives up to the hype. It will be interesting to see what the actual writing in the game is like, I was just able to play through a couple of puzzles. It seems like the final version is going to be ridiculously difficult as you progress. I just hope it's not too short, because from what I have played Portal is a game you are going to want to play a LOT this coming holiday. The Orange Box is one of the best gaming deals to come around in years, hands down.
