Get To Know Your Geeks: Chris

It's the final installment of Get to Know Your Geeks, and we wrap it up with... me. Check out the whole series here.

When did you first discover you were a geek?

I cried on the day when I got my first NES. As a kid my favorite TV shows were all on PBS. I lived for the smell of a new pack of LEGOs. Being a geek has always been with me, basically.

What is the one video game you keep coming back to no matter how many times you've played it?

I am constantly playing Final Fantasy 9, and I imagine Bioshock is going to enter heavy rotation as well.

    What is your day job?

I am a Social Media Guru/web designer/front end producer for an Internet marketing company in Seattle called Portent Interactive. We are pretty awesome. You should hire us. I live and breathe Photoshop and CSS.

If you were stranded on an island with a DVD player and could only bring ONE DVD or DVD set, what would you bring?

Futurama, or something narrated by David Attenborough.

Put your music on shuffle and hit play. What comes up?

TV on the Radio - Hours.

How long have you been with The Weekly Geek, and what is your favorite thing you have done so far for the site?

I joined the radio show back in 2002 I believe, when Grant was still talking about pro wrestling and playing Nerf Herder and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes on the air. I don't have one favorite thing I have done for the site, it's all amazing. Being a part of this has afforded me many opportunities in my life, and I am eternally grateful for the ability to do something like this. My favorite times with the site, though, have to be giving stuff away. I love running contests and making someone happy with free stuff. Coincidentally, we have a contest going right now. Why don't you enter it?

What blogs do you regularly read?

Boing Boing, Destructoid... look I'll just save time by linking you to my shared Google reader items. I read almost a hundred different blogs. Check out that link if you want to know what I've been reading this week. I am obsessed with my rss reader.

Do you have any non-geek related hobbies?

I like to cook, but I guess that could be considered geeky to some extent. I also paint and create art, but that can be geeky too.

What was the worst video game you have ever played?

American Chopper for the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox/toaster. What a horrible load of crap.

The Little Mermaid for the original NES. It was the very first non-used game I ever bought with my own money, I was 8 or so, and I was never able to get beyond the 2nd level. Talk about disappointment! You'd think they would have made the game playable for the movie's target audience!

Get To Know Your Geeks: SecksCab

maximum damage! This week in our Get To Know Your Geeks segment, we meet SecksCab, who single-handedly caused us to be blocked by various employer's web site filters with his name alone! He is known for his hilarious commentary about geeky subjects like Pokémon and LARPing, and informing us about the worst people in the world he has ever met. But what really makes this wacky misanthropist tick? Join us, won't you? Yes. You will.

When did you first discover you were a geek?

At first I was a dork, then somehow I leveled up and became a nerd. Then I learned how to do laundry appropriately, and I became a geek. I hope someday to gain enough experience points to eventually be an eccentric.

What is the one video game you keep coming back to no matter how many times you've played it?

Katamari Damacy. The sole reason why I possess a PS2. I love the inherent silliness to it.

    What is your day job?

I am a toy store merchandiser. Meaning, I make displays and decide which toys are put together for full impact, and which toys to stack up in the corner, hopefully to be ignored. I also draw endlessly, which I consider my true vocation.

If you were stranded on an island with a dvd player and could only bring ONE dvd or dvd set, what would you bring?

Yikes... the obvious choice would be the complete Doctor Who. That's like 50 discs right there.

Put your music on shuffle and hit play. What comes up?

    Splasher by Skinny Puppy.

How long have you been with the weekly geek, and what is your favorite thing you have done so far for the site?

I've been around for the beginning, I just never actually did anything and I'm addicted to the vice of sloth. My favorite thing I've done was the Burger King X-Box games review.

What blogs do you regularly read?

Portalofevil.com, which contains the enormously awesome poetv.com, which is where I see all the Youtube videos that are about future serial killers before they actually start the gig.

Do you have any non-geek related hobbies?

I practice zazen meditation every morning and try, without too much success, to have a clear head. I read everything I can on philosophy and history, and I absolutely adore visiting the local art galleries to see what's new.

What was the worst video game you have ever played?

I am one of these sick people who embrace the "worst" things and adore them. Worst video game I've ever actually played (as opposed to keeping around on the shelf as a trophy of kitsch) is Sigma Six, which made no sense whatsoever and suffered from a truly vindictive localization team.

Get To Know Your Geeks: The Geek

the geekThis week we talk to The Geek in our ongoing Get To Know Your Geeks feature. Enjoy!

When did you first discover you were a geek?
I think I knew pretty much most of my life. Like at least somewhere around kindergarten to 2nd grade. I asked my teacher for math to do over the summer after kindergarten, I was always kind of a class clown. I think what really nailed it home was when I was doing really well in my classes, helping other people and so I ended up getting tested on my abilities and went to a "gifted" school once a week.

What is the one video game you keep coming back to no matter how many times you've played it?
Hmmm, there are a couple. I don't come back to them super frequently, but I do get yearnings to play them every now and then, no matter how many times I've beaten them. Super Mario World, Toe Jam and Earl, Final Fantasy VI, (and almost embarrassingly) Halo 2 online.

    What is your day job?
I am an accountant. It's kinda nerdy, but not really geeky. Most people would find the kind of work I do pretty boring, but I like the numbers. Though lately I've been unsure if it's something I want to do for the rest of my life. I'd like to get into something more geeky, but don't know if I have the skill set to do so.

If you were stranded on an island with a dvd player and could only bring ONE dvd or dvd set, what would you bring?
If it was one DVD, I'd probably have to say The Fifth Element. If it was one SET, I almost want to cheat and say that brand new set of ST:TNG that has all 7 seasons together in one box, but I think I'd have to go with the totally un-creative answer of Firefly.

Put your music on shuffle and hit play. What comes up?

    I'll do my first 5:
Metroid Fusion - Sector 4 (AQA) Aquatic Level Control Area
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Oh, Light...!
We Love Katamari - Katamari on the Rocks
Final Fantasy Tactics - Random Waltz
Halo 2 - Halo Theme Mjolnir Mix

I have other CDs besides game soundtracks, I swear!

How long have you been with The Weekly Geek, and what is your favorite thing you have done so far for the site?
Since the very beginning when it was just me on the college radio trying to be funny all by myself.
My favorite thing? It's hard to pick. I kinda want to say going to E3, but that's really generic. Video Armageddon was a crapton of fun, being able to put on tournaments for people and give away awesome prizes. Our interviews with Billy West and Mark Hamill were probably my favorites out of all of them. I also really enjoyed having been a guest on Dai-Cast. Probably what was the coolest thing, though, was being able to help out a fellow gamer, sending a Nintendo WiFi Dongle all the way to Luxembourg as a prize.

What blogs do you regularly read?
I mostly read webcomics and sometimes check out the blog posts that go with them, but I've been using Google Reader more often now to try to keep up with Destructoid, Kotaku, Joystiq, Ectomo, and Gay Gamer.

Do you have any non-geek related hobbies?
Not really at the moment. Though I did play sports in high school, if you can believe it. Football and wrestling.

What was the worst video game you have every played?
    American Chopper. Hands down.
