Podcast for 10.20.08 | A Return To Form

areturntoform.jpg

It's an action packed show this week with a full cast as Ryan joins me, Qais, Jinny and Ross for the very first time. This week we're discussing E3 opening its doors to the public again, Little Big Planet being delayed for offending people, whether or not you should feel guilty for pirating games, Mother 3, Bioshock 2 and co-op split screen gaming. We also dip into the mailbag and discuss the scariest games we've ever played, and Qais whips out the most epic mailbag reading of all time. It's a full cast and a full 20 minutes longer than usual. It's like its your birthday or something!

Yeah btw, for some reason the sidebar on your website and the Podcast directory on iTunes list this Podcast's name exactly like the last Podcast.

So basically both Podcast's names are "Drinking the Blizzards Kool-Aid"

Thanks for the heads up, Lior! Should be fixed now.

I can't say I agree with you on your point about recycling. While I'm also worried about the possiblity that theoretically recycled goods are ending up being burnt in China I still don't think that just tossing things in the bin is the best option.
I can't speak for the US, but in Europe companies have an obligtion to recycle things such as consumer electrical goods which would otherwise be very polluting to the water table as they often contain lots of heavy metals like lead or cadmium. It's a different thing with goods like aluminium or paper but people do use recycled paper in increasing amounts.
Glass is difficult, its heavy and energy intensive to recycle and one of the most obvious ways that it could be less environmentally damaging could be simply to refill (like milk bottles) rather than smashing them up to start over again.

I do some recycling myself by putting all my organic waste into a wormery which means that not only is my rubbish less smelly but I also get earth for the garden out of it.

So do you just throw everything out or do you try and buy responsably and things will smaller packaging?

@inerd

of course I am not wasteful just to be wasteful and all "fuck recycling, yeah!" but when it comes to things like recycling paper... paper is a renewable resource. Paper companies aren't really going into old growth forests and state parks cutting down our precious trees to make your Starbucks coffee cup. Paper companies mostly get their paper from tree farms. Using more paper is basically ordering MORE trees to be grown. Paper recycling is largely inefficient.

Your point about hazardous items being recycled is a good one too. Look, I am all for sustainibility. If we can eventually get to a point where we are in a total symbiotic relationship with our planet where our consumerism only has a positive impact - great. But we're not there yet, and the recycling programs we have in place are largely there just to make us feel better about ourselves. There's no landfill crisis, and most of the major global waste issues won't be impacted by ordinary people just doing their part. There needs to be larger scale change.

20 min longer? My b-day is this week....how'd you know?

@chris

I suppose I'm just againt the idea that change needs to only come from above. While paper recycling might be ineffecient its still largely more efficient than chopping down and processing a new tree. Purified metals similarly use vast amounts of energy to process and refine. It just seems to me that if you want change you have to help make change (go Obama).

What gets to me most though is the depressingly large amounts of plastics I see in the sea and can't help hoping that if I protest againt huge plastic packages and try to reduce the amount I consume then my overall impact will be smaller.

Love the lisp. (Resuming the listenin'!)

The Penn & Teller show on recycling wasn't entirely accurate... But some things are just better off being thown away such as paper and certain types of plastics. Recycling is important but many people fall for the "feel good" aspect of it and don't think about what they're actually doing. Landfills have some very serious problems of their own but they currenty are more environmentally friendly overall than building more industrial installations to recycle stuff that is more efficient to make from scratch.

Oh man, Case 5 (the bonus case) in the first Phoenix Wright is still my favorite one out of the whole series. I hope you're enjoying it as much as I did Jinny!

@Diego I am totally in love with this game and although the bonus chapter is much harder than the rest of the game...the storyline is so good! I am enjoying it immensely and need to hurry up and finish it even if I don't really want it to end. Lucky for me I still have 2 whole games to play after. Have you seen photos of the Ema action figures from TGS? Soooo adorable!

Diego says:

@Jinny Yeah, there are some parts of the case that were really frustrating but it was definitely worth it.

I just saw those statues. Ema looks awesome and Edgeworth's is just hilarious.
