We're a geek culture podcast and blog covering video games, music, food and more. We are the kinds of people who evangelize whatever we are into - it could be anything - but it's usually pretty geeky. We're casual, conversational, NSFW and hopefully interesting. We hope you enjoy it.

Sarah Palin prays for a pipeline

The Weekly Geek doesn't get political often, but it should be said that we're all progressive (we don't use the slur term "Liberal" that Bush Sr. invented). Since we're also a blog, we occasionally see things that normal media don't, and I found this on Youtube this morning and am shocked it isn't plastered all over the news. Sarah Palin, praying for a pipeline (since those only go to Christians, apparently).

    Oy.

What is worse? A sincere Fundie or an insincere Fundie?

The Weekly Geek actually gets political fairly often - increasingly so with the podcast. I don't like it. It's one of the reasons I listen less frequently than I did in the past (time constraints don't help either).

Anyway, I don't think this blog is the right place for posts like these. And the little "since those only go to Christians, apparently" jab was doubly unnecessary (and simply ignorant).

The chick is religious. She's speaking at a Christian church. Christians like to pray for things. Aside from that, I don't see how more can be read from that without some form of aggressive bias. It's not like she's praying that those "evil jews" don't get their hands on Alaska's oil.

Whether or not a candidate's religious views affects your vote is totally up to you. But if you're reporting this because you feel it's your "(fake) journalistic duty" to let the (maybe) hundreds of readers of this blog know about it, then at least do it with some class. And while you're at it, perhaps show some consistency and post about the various, equally irrelevant quirks of Obama.

I think she's just pandering to the crowd. Yeah, she says some silly things, but her only real mistake was not realizing that anything you say can and will be used against you.

I can't believe I wasted 7 minutes of my life on that. It displays Sarah Palin in a bad light, yes, because she sounds like a fucking moron. I can't believe she got through that speech last night (even though I know that she was just reading what McCain's speech writers wrote for her).

But that aside, I didn't hear whatever it is that was supposed to be so offensive. I just wrote a bunch of stuff, but I see it's basically the same as Lorenzo's 3rd paragraph. You probably know (but maybe you don't; perhaps at no point in your life were you part of a religious community) that their purpose in praying is to get god to change the minds of those who disagree with them. They don't actually think that if they pray hard enough, suddenly a new pipeline will appear overnight. It's fucking presumptuous as hell (help them to see my way, which is obviously right), but plenty of people are guilty of thinking that way (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

I also agree with Lorenzo that "since those only go to Christians, apparently" doesn't make any sense. They're Republicans; they'd love for every part of the country to have a pipeline, because that would mean that there was oil drilling going on there. Praying for something doesn't mean that they think it's the only way to make it happen. They truly believe that god controls the universe and he makes things happen for those who pray to him, as crazy as that sounds to us.

By the way, who do you think will watch this video and change their mind? Some group of atheist Republicans? I dare say that anyone who would react negatively to this video probably wasn't going to vote for McCain in the first place, and likewise the people who are voting for McCain probably don't see anything wrong with the video.

That's a pretty modern congregation, by the way. My parents wouldn't be caught dead in a congregation that had a drum set and a guitar.

Maybe I should just delete this site from my RSS reader. I still enjoy the podcast, but I haven't gotten anything useful out of the dot com in a while.

Hey guys. I understand how you could be miffed at Sexcab's remarks re: Xtianity. While we are a geek culture blog, we have also always been about sharing information about things we are all interested in, whether it be video games, food or even politics. We have tried in the past to avoid politics and religion because of these very reactions. There are writers on this site who are religious and non-religious and I hope I don't have to put a bullshit disclaimer saying "the views of any single writer are not the official views of The Weekly Geek as a whole" because that would be asinine.

Sexcab was incensed about something that he feels passionate about. Personally, I agree with him. I think that Palin's praying for oil pipelines is akin to a greedy king hoping a magical invisible man in the sky makes it rain gold. It's illogical, it's negative and it is a detriment to society. At the very least it shows that this person is so out of touch with reality that they should never ever ever be a heart attack away from the presidency.

We don't try to represent all views on this website. We are not a major news network, or even a news website. We are a collective of writers and friends who are sharing their opinion on the internet. Take that as it is.

I'm sorry that some of you felt like it was enough to remove the site from your RSS reader. You don't have to read the stuff you don't agree with. But I get it. It's cool.

SERIOUSLY? lol... I highly doubt god wants a pipeline in AK.

    Agrees with Sammy.

Aside from the people drinking the Conservative Kool Aid, I'm a Christian and I'm horrified by Palin's stances. I feel her platform denigrates not only logical reasoning - which all humans are capable of, whether they choose to use it or not - but I fear it harms and misrepresents the teachings of Christ just as much, if not more.

I shouldn't be surprised when (in my opinion) 90% of organized religious activities in America miss the point of faith entirely, but Sarah Palin's brand of Fascism is particularly mortifying.
