We're a geek culture podcast and blog covering video games, music, food and more. We are the kinds of people who evangelize whatever we are into - it could be anything - but it's usually pretty geeky.

Podcast for 06-02-08 | Totally Hardcore

    totallyhardcore.jpg

With companies catering to the swelling masses of "casual" gamers, hardcore gamers are starting to feel slightly underrepresented. This week, Chris, Qais and Jinny talk about (more like obsess about) The World Ends With You and what it does to shake up the RPG formula, how Guitar Hero for the DS may actually be good, Beyond Good and Evil getting a much-deserved sequel, and the strange subset of hardcore Warcraft III custom map players. We then proceed to rip through the mailbag, where we actually read your actual letters on the air. I don't know how it works, I'm not a scientist.

I just started playing The World Ends with you the other day, but I haven't had much time to get into it. My first impression going through the intro was a mix of Kingdom Hearts and Jet Grind Radio in regards to the style. So far bouncing combos back and forth through the screens seems like an awesome idea. It's disappointing to hear that Square Enix doesn't want to make more games like this. I think as it stands they rely too much on slapping the "Final Fantasy" name on everything, and I'm interested in checking stuff out just because they made it, I like it if they explore new directions.

To mention Wii Fit a bit, I bought it for my mom as a Mother's Day present. She loves it and has been playing it a lot. My younger brother (who's 19) plays it with her most of the time, but he's only interested in playing the mini-games on her profile. My girlfriend (who's a gamer) tried it last weekend and became addicted to it and wants to buy it for herself as soon as she can. I tried it a couple times and didn't care that much... it's okay. The talking, exercising Wii Fit board in the game is creepy... If you don't play it for years and then turn it on, is he going to have a big fat belly from not exercising and tell you that you can't stand on him anymore?

I'm a big DotA player, that game has legs, plus it's a more cooperative project than most games. I think you have the problem with hard-core gamers exactly right, they are largely a hateful bunch - but with things like TDA (Team DotA-Allstars) or other leagues can try and control that stuff.

I think most video game players (hardcore) are privileged white men, and massively insecure so they pull out all the stops with racism/homophobia/sexism I mean you name any group that isn't them and they hate it.

    What say you?!
