Podcast for 05-19-08 | The Great Slipper Collapse of 1985

    greatslippercollapse.jpg

This week, Qais, Chris and Ross the Transparent Underground Gnoll meet at the Fortress of Geekitude to discuss the state of video game trade shows, Konami's new Rock Revolution and what a new drum peripheral could mean for crowded living rooms everywhere, making worthwhile games for children, the Great Slipper Collapse of 1985 (includes bonus Fraggle Rock discussion) and then the boys dip into the mailbag. Which isn't a euphemism.

I really enjoyed the conversation about "kids games." Whenever I hear a reviewer say a bunch of bad stuff about some game like SpongeBob or something, and then say, "but it's a kids game," it always irks me because it seems like they're justifying companies making bad games for kids. I remember the games I grew up with and they were very influential on me. Sure there was the occasional licensed game like the Ninja Turtles, but there were just so many good games from Mario and Zelda, to Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy, or Maniac Mansion and the Battle of Olympus (which was the first thing to get me into Greek Mythology). I think that there are plenty of games still made today which aren't marketed as "kids games" but are games everyone enjoys and would still be perfectly suitable for children to play. I'm sure that as gamers become parents, they will ensure that their own kids have the higher quality games to choose from and not all licensed "kid-game" garbage. Sorry if I'm not adding much to the discussion, but while I was listening to the podcast I felt like you covered everything I was thinking of and I agreed 100%.

enjoy your cast, IMO it's one of the few worth listening to. I also like the not-just-video-games focus, even though the main reason I listen is for gaming news.

just wanted to ask , are any of you psyched for the Fraggle Rock movie because it's non-CG? personally I cringe a little every time I see the CG versions of Jaba the Hutt and Yoda. fugly.

also thanks for telling me who does your opening tune (cicada, right?). I'm going to try and look up more tunes by that person because your intro music rocks.

    long live animatronics!
