Podcast for 05-05-08 | Press the Carjack Button

This week isn't ALL about Grand Theft Auto IV, though it's hard to talk about anything else this week as its been ruling most gamers' lives. In a good way. Chris and Qais discuss the greater value of Grand Theft Auto as a piece of high art, completely without sarcasm! No, seriously! Why don't you believe me?! We then move on to Guitar Hero's brand being diluted, and Qais talks about insomnia and what kind of snacks he likes when he's pulling an all-nighter.

No I do not listen to Aerosmith, and I would appreciate it if you never imply that I might like them ever again.

I picked up Okami for Wii since I never played it on PS2 and my girlfriend always says how great it is and it's her new favorite game ever. Plus all the reviews love it too. I'm not very far in it, but I was also having trouble getting a consistent shake attack. I was assuming maybe it was just because I was bad at waggling it due to not having the Twilight Princess training (I played it on Gamecube with a proper left-handed Link), but you (Chris) have a problem with it too. Of course, you have a problem with all the waggle controls... but I assumed you'd be good at getting them to work to their "full potential" since you've done it a lot. Oh well, I don't know why they don't give vast controller options for all Wii games like SSBB. In that game shake attack is even auto-set to off. Probably every Wii game should be able to work with a Gamecube controller too.

There really is no "full potential" for waggle controls. They aren't precise, they aren't fun, and they definitely aren't a good way to control a character. I really wish they gave controller options, too. I HATE being forced into an uncomfortable control scheme just because someone thinks it's clever.

I absolutely LOVE Okami (Wii version; haven't played on PS2) and lost myself to the game for 7 hours during my first play. I do, however, really detest the waggle and try to avoid using it at all costs.

Most excellent podcast - I was totally digging how you two were talking about all nighters. I'm an animator - so I've done a few of those. Your talk about insomnia, the trance-like state you go into and having the sun come up while you work brought back so many fond memories. I'm glad I'm not the only insane person who loves depriving myself of sleep for when you get passionate about something.
