We're a geek culture podcast and blog covering video games, music, food and more. We are the kinds of people who evangelize whatever we are into - it could be anything - but it's usually pretty geeky.

    Podcast for 02-25-08 | Superheroes

    022508superheroes.jpg

With HD-DVD dead, the geeks from The Weekly Geek somehow manage to make a podcast in these most dire of times. Yea, though the apocalypse is upon us, we can still enjoy ranting and raving about video games and movies. This week, Chris, Mack and Qais discuss the wonders that are Wondercon and the Game Developer's Conference, expanding into discussion of community games, digital downloads, media wars, how much cooler Rock Band is versus Guitar Hero, the virtues of Leonardo DiCaprio and how DC will never really kill off their characters, even though they say they will. Liars.

Download the podcast here, and subscribe to the feed! Show notes after der jump.

I apologize for the audio quality of the podcast, we had technical issues again which makes me and Qais sound quiet and Mack sound really loud. Good for Mack, I guess!

I hope you enjoy listening to me breathe.

I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but rock band and guitar hero are two different games. The guitar hero series is all about killer riffs and awesome solos, plus the challenge that comes along with it. Rock Band is a game that is meant to bring groups of people together. Theyre very different games and shouldn't be compared.

While I get what you are trying to say, Rock Band and Guitar Hero share a number of incredibly similar gameplay mechanics. Saying that Rock Band and Guitar Hero shouldn't be compared is like saying that a Half Life shouldn't be compared to a BioShock. While I get that they are trying to do different things (sort of) they are still comparable.

The heavy breathing was quite creepy.

I can't agree more on the fact that the male characters from Capcom all look the same. I was playing Resident Evil 4 some time ago on the Wii and a non-gamer relative of mine asked if Leon was the same guy from the DMC4 demo. I was like, who? Nero? Dante?

If you have ever had a remote interest in superhero comics, or comics in general, you should go out at get Invincible. It takes all the DC archetypes and runs with them, but with a sense of humor and great writing. Parts of it read like sitcom, other parts have great drama, all with great art. I would gladly give my trades to anyone who wanted to read them if only they weren't lost in circulation somewhere.

Thanks for the podcast, I've been listening for over a year and it makes my daily traffic much more enjoyable.

But lately I haven't been able to listen. The overall volume of the show has been decreasing so much that even when I turn up my car's stereo up all the way, I can't hear the voices over the car or even the hum of the speakers.

To prove that it wasn't my car, my ipod or my own hearing, I went back in itunes and did an experiment. I loaded up a few songs and set the volume to a comfortable level. Then I went back to a past podcast like "Obessments 6/25/07" with the same volume level and jumped mid podcast. I could hear everyone and the volume was very easy to deal with.

Then I jumped mid podcast in "Bizzleteats 1/21/08" with the same volume and it was really quiet. Ah ha, I am not going deaf!

I know that this week was an exception but the normal trend of volume is going down. I suggest that you run the final mp3 through a volume increase filter.

    Thanks

Thanks for the kind words, UB! Yeah, we have had some strange technical difficulties the past few podcasts and I truly apologize for the horrible sound quality. Each time has been a different and strange fluke, usually centered around a lack of disk space, or a malfunctioning microphone. Even after the initial sound test we always do, something tends to go wrong. My choice is either to scrap the thing entirely and have us all re-record (and somehow recapture all the spontaneous things we said) or just put live what we have. So I do the latter. Thanks for continuing to listen, though, and I will try my hardest to bring the podcast back up to the quality you are used to.
