Top 10 Albums of the Year Podcast

    top102007art.jpg

The time of the year to make our elitist decrees has come, and we here at The Weekly Geek think you should listen to our opinions. Because we are indie rock elitist bastards, that's why. Tune in to 2007's Top 10 Albums of the year podcast where Mike and Chris discuss what music stuck in their heads this year. From The White Stripes to Radiohead to John Vanderslice and more bands you probably haven't heard of. It's a long one, clocking in at over 2 and a half hours, but well worth it. Discover a new band today! Download the podcast here, or just subscribe to our feed. Podcast is about 100mb and 2 hours long. NSF56k!

    Show notes after the jump.

Check out all of the albums we mentioned on Amazon:

    Intro: Justice "Genesis"
    Outro: Justice "Newjack"

    Chris:
John Vanderslice Emerald City "The Minaret"
    Andrew Bird Armchair Apocrypha "Heretics"
The Shins Wincing the Night Away "Australia"
Radiohead In Rainbows "Jigsaw Falling Into Place"
    M.I.A. Kala "Paper Planes"
LCD Soundsystem The Sound of Silver "North American Scum"
Jens Lekman Night Falls Over Kortedala "I'm Leaving You Because I Don't Love You"
    Deerhoof Friend Opportunity "Believe ESP"
Arcade Fire Neon Bible "Antichrist Television Blues"
Tegan and Sara The Con "Burn Your Life Down"

    Honorable Mention:
    Low Drums and Guns
    Justice Cross
    White Stripes Icky Thump
Iron and Wine The Shepherd's Dog
    Feist The Reminder
    Battles Mirrored
    Bjork Volta

    Mike:
10 – PJ Harvey White Chalk "Before Departure"
Here she's vulnerable, instead of visceral.
9 – The White Stripes Icky Thump "Rag & Bone"
I can totally envision Jack and Meg going to yard sales.
8 – New Pornographers Challengers "All the Old Showstoppers"
Challengers got a lot of mediocre reviews when I loved the hell out of it.
7 – Arcade Fire Neon Bible "Neon Bible"
Grew on me. My review was a little more negative than I wished it had been in hindsight. What I first perceived to be flaws in the album ended up being strengths.
6 – Iron & Wine The Shepherd's Dog "Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car"
Cyclone of sound where Sam Beam's voice is the eye of the storm.
5 – Low Drums and Guns "Belarus"
Dirges for this war-time era we're in.
4 – Feist The Reminder "Limit to Your Love"
Another slow song for me, but this characterizes the soulful element that Feist is so brilliant at.
3 – Radiohead In Rainbows "Bodysnatchers"
Great to see Thom and Johnny with the same intensity they had back on OK Computer. I didn't post anything on the series of web videos that came out right after this record, but I will here.
2 – Andrew Bird Armchair Apocrypha "Fiery Crash"
I've heard four live versions of this song and none of them have been the same. We're lucky he captured this particular version before he had the desire to change it.
1 – of Montreal Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? "Gronlandic Edit"
Funky, depressing, silly, and solemn - every emotional range is covered on this record in a very unorthodox fashion.

I really enjoyed that. I'll have to look into the ones that I'm not familiar with. ;) Not love for Spoon, though??? :(

    Thanks you guys.

@Belf: Earlier this year I did a review on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. I just didn't think it was as complete an album as Gimmie Fiction was. It did have some great tracks though - "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" would've made my Top 10 Tracks of the Year if we had that.

@thebluedart: Justice kicks so much ass. How could we not include them?
