Once I Wanted To Be The Greatest
Geeky Video Review: "The Greatest" Cat Power
Chan Marshall, Indie Music's current princess, sure has a checkered personal and musical past. With admitted alcohol abuse and rehab, hit or miss live performances, and a diverse but enjoyable range of record releases, it's hard to know what to make of her. Ms. Marshall's latest disc The Greatest and the subsequent tour to support that album has cleared up a lot of the questions though. It seems Chan is making good on her limitless potential.
Backed by the insanely talented and time-tested bunch the Memphis Rhythm Band, Chan's confidence in her abilities has risen tremendously. Not unlike Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings The Flood (my favorite of last year), The Greatest has a very dusty, southern flair. All the instrumentation is extremely tasteful, and the lyrics alluring, yet distant enough to require repeated listens.
Her latest TV appearance on Jools Holland showcases Marshall's silky vocal charm (reminiscent of a more interesting Norah Jones or a more sincere Fiona Apple) and the clean presentation of her backing band. Truly a stunning performance to watch.
